Tiger Woods’ Statement: Why Do We Care?

My regularly scheduled program was interrupted this morning by breaking news on ABC 7. I honestly thought that there was an actual crisis in the world somewhere and the American people were about to be addressed by the President. Imagine my not-so surprise when I saw that the interruption was for Tiger Woods’ statement about his unfaithfulness. HUH???? Wait a minute. Do we now live in a world where an athlete who cant keep it in his pants (surprise, surprise) receives the same kind of treatment as the leader of the free nation? We need to seriously reevaluate the media and let them know what is news and what isnt.  I personally do not care about what Tiger Woods did and I agree with him wholeheartedly that this is a matter between he and his wife. Period. The American public has become so infatuated with a sense of entitlement into the peronal lives of celebrities that we put on the pedestal in the first place. Then to make matters worse, after the statement, the news outlets went out to bring in experts to dissect what he just said. WTF???? Where is the news there? One day Perez Hilton was on The View and he and Whoopi had a disagreement over whether or not people deserve to know the peronal lives of celebrities. I have to agree with Whoopi. Obviously, entertainment bloggers and magazines forget that there was a time that celerities were judged by their talent and not their personal lives. Tiger is NOT the only athlete that cheated on his wife. So why is this news? Why do we care so much? Back in the day, people only cared that celebrities did what they were paid to do – whether it were music, sports, acting, etc. And we did not know what they did in their personal lives. Period. At what point do we hold the media and oursleves accountable by determining what really is interesting and what isn’t. Yes I know that millions of people were probably waiting to hear what Tiger had to say, but there also are millions of people who rather watch their regular programming.  Why couldnt the news show this during their regular scheduled time? Why couldnt people just read about it in the gossip magazines like in the old days? I do not understand nor do I agree with  interrupting programs for a  MAN WHO CHEATED!!! He did not embezzle millions, he is not a serial killer, he did not reveal some kind of golf scandal. What he did had absolutely nothing to do with his talent. He cheated on his wife. Last time I checked, that was not major breaking news. In the meantime, there was a shooter on Northern Illinois’s campus this morning. I guess if the shooter cheated, it would have been breaking news….
